Being a fibromyalgia patient, it’s very difficult to find the best treatment since there is no cure for fibromyalgia.
Fibromyalgia is an autoimmune disease the causes widespread pain all over the body with other symptoms such as numbness, tingling, irritable bowel syndrome, depression, migraines, dysmenorrhea, and or endometriosis and more. It is a common and chronic syndrome that causes bodily pain and mental distress.
Symptoms of fibromyalgia can be confused with those of arthritis, or joint inflammation. However, unlike arthritis, it has not been found to cause joint or muscle inflammation and damage. It is seen as a rheumatic condition, in other words, one that causes soft tissue pain or myofascial pain.
According to the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases (NIAMS), around 5 million adults aged 18 years or over in the United States experience fibromyalgia, and 80 to 90 per cent of fibromyalgia patients are women.
There are different types of treatments for fibromyalgia. I have tried acupuncture, massage, physical therapy, chiropractor, reiki. I also struggle with PTSD and Depression which made my case quite difficult. When I tried all the above treatments with prescription pills, I was so frustrated and it seemed like a hopeless situation because nothing seemed to work. I found myself busy getting treatments. They were overwhelming and expensive so I decided to stop and treat my mental health first because that’s the most important to me. If I get my mind right, I will be able to get the strength to fight on.
I started taking anti-depressants and my depression which I was doing well from reoccurred and this time it was worse. I had not just myself to care of but I also have a son and being a single independent mother who gets no support, life was difficult. I also commenced weekly Physio Therapy and Occupational therapy. That was very helpful especially when we finally figured out the best antidepressant that worked for me.
While I was in therapy, I was advised to go to water or hydrotherapy. I was so not feeling any form of physical therapy. I remembered the ordeals I went through with those other treatments that I have tried and I was so reluctant.
Eventually, I told my Doctor about it and I told her the specific facility I wanted to go to. It’s beautiful with palm trees and I wanted to have a calm relaxing feeling. The referral was approved and I started going to fibromyalgia clinic for hydrotherapy.
It took two months for my body to get used to water therapy because I got really sore after each session. I started going Tuesdays and Thursdays but now I every day Monday to Friday. My stamina has improved, I’m stronger, and I lost some weight yay!
